Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn. Bhd. (Perodua) has been Malaysia’s best-selling automotive brand for decades. In 2025 alone, the company recorded nearly 360,000 vehicle registrations, capturing almost 44% of the local automotive market.
From the iconic Kancil to popular models like the Ativa, Bezza, and Myvi, millions of Perodua vehicles are now travelling on Malaysian roads.
However, regardless of which Perodua model you drive, one thing remains the same. Your car battery will eventually reach the end of its lifespan. When it is time for a replacement, choosing the correct battery type is important to ensure your vehicle continues to operate properly.
This guide will help you identify the right battery type for your Perodua vehicle.
Perodua Battery Compatibility Table
Refer to the table below to identify the suitable battery type for your Perodua model.

What Type of Battery Does Perodua Use?
Since the introduction of the Kancil in 1994, Perodua has launched more than 10 vehicle models in Malaysia. Most Perodua vehicles use one of the following three battery types:
- NS40ZL
- M42L
- M42R
The correct battery type depends on the vehicle model, year of production, and in some cases, whether the vehicle is equipped with Eco Idle technology, also known as an auto start-stop system.
For example, certain Perodua models such as the Myvi can use up to three different battery types, including NS40ZL, M42L, or M42R depending on the variant and year.
Difference Between Perodua NS40ZL, M42L and M42R Batteries
At first glance, these battery codes may seem confusing. While all car batteries have positive and negative terminals, they differ in specifications such as Cold Cranking Amps (CCA), capacity (Ah), dimensions, and terminal placement.
Each battery type is designed to match the electrical requirements and installation configuration of different Perodua models.
NS40ZL
The NS40ZL is the most commonly used battery type among Perodua vehicles. Most earlier Perodua models were equipped with this battery type.
It has a 38Ah capacity and a CCA rating of 330.
Perodua models that use the NS40ZL battery include:
- Kancil
- Kelisa
- Kenari
- Kembara
- Rusa
- Viva
- Nautica
- Early Myvi models
- Early Alza models
- Axia
- Bezza
M42L
Three Perodua models that use the M42L battery are the Ativa, Myvi Eco Idle, and Bezza.
This battery has a 40Ah capacity and a CCA rating of 400. Unlike the NS40ZL, the M42L is classified as an Enhanced Flooded Battery (EFB).
EFB batteries are specifically designed to support vehicles equipped with Eco Idle technology, which requires frequent engine restarting during operation.
The letter “L” in M42L refers to the position of the negative terminal, which is located on the left side to match the cable arrangement of these Perodua models.
M42R
The M42R is a variation of the M42L battery. Both batteries share similar specifications, with a 40Ah capacity and a CCA rating of 400.
The main difference is the position of the negative terminal. For the M42R, the negative terminal is located on the right side.
Perodua models that use the M42R battery include:
- Alza (2022 onwards)
- Aruz Eco Idle
- Myvi (2022 onwards)
How To Confirm Your Perodua Battery Type
Besides referring to the compatibility table above, there are several ways to confirm the correct battery type for your Perodua vehicle.
The easiest method is to check the existing battery currently installed in your car. If you have never replaced the battery since buying the vehicle from the showroom, it should be the original battery recommended by the manufacturer.
Another way is to refer to the owner’s manual supplied with your vehicle.
Apart from checking the battery capacity (Ah) and CCA rating, you should also verify the terminal position and whether your Perodua is equipped with Eco Idle technology.
