Modern cars lean more and more on their electrical systems. One feature that's caught on fast in newer vehicles is the auto start-stop system, which cuts fuel use by switching the engine off whenever the car's stationary.
In Malaysia, almost every Perodua model, Axia, Bezza, Myvi, Alza, Ativa, comes with this feature, badged as ECO Idle. But that convenience puts more strain on the battery. Best battery types for start-stop cars
Start-stop cars don't run like conventional ones. Instead of starting the engine once per trip, the battery has to handle repeated "microcycles": powering the electronics while the engine's off, then delivering a high-current burst to restart it, over and over.
That calls for specialised batteries.
AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) vs. EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery)
AGM is about as advanced as it gets for start-stop cars. Instead of a conventional flooded design, it holds the electrolyte in a fibreglass mat, which lets it handle far more charge and discharge cycles. It charges faster, holds up better under heavy electrical load, and lasts longer. Some AGM batteries have been tested through tens of thousands of start-stop cycles, which is why they suit cars with more advanced start-stop systems.
EFB is a step up from the standard flooded battery, using better plate technology and additives to cycle more reliably than a regular SLI battery. You'll usually find EFB in entry-level start-stop cars, since it strikes a decent balance between durability and cost. It also copes better with heat than AGM does.
A few manufacturers are experimenting with Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) and lead-carbon batteries. Both last longer and run more efficiently, but they're pricier and still rare in everyday cars.
