Behind the strong reputation of Astra car batteries lies a facility most consumers never see which is Makmal Hijau. Officially launched on 7 August 2025, this specialised laboratory ensures that every Astra battery sold meets strict safety, performance, and quality standards.
While it operates behind the scenes, Makmal Hijau is the foundation that supports Astra batteries’ reliability. Its work ensures that batteries delivered to customers are not only compatible with their vehicles, but also safe for long-term use.

Astra Batteries Rigorously Tested to International Standards
To guarantee consistent performance, Makmal Hijau subjects Astra batteries to a comprehensive testing regime based on the IEC 60095-1 international standard for lead-acid batteries.
Key tests include capacity testing (C20), where batteries are fully charged and discharged over a controlled 20-hour cycle to confirm that real-world capacity matches what is advertised. This ensures transparency and fairness for consumers.

Another critical evaluation is the Cold Cranking Amperes (CCA) test, which measures a battery’s ability to start an engine under extreme conditions. Batteries are cooled to -18°C overnight to simulate harsh winter environments before being tested.
For long-term durability, Makmal Hijau conducts corrosion testing, one of the most time-intensive procedures. Batteries are placed in a 60°C water bath under continuous charging for 26 days, accelerating chemical ageing that would normally take years. Voltage output is then analysed to confirm the integrity of internal lead plates.
Vibration testing completes the core evaluations, simulating the mechanical stress batteries experience during real-world driving. Any voltage irregularities after testing may indicate internal damage, ensuring only structurally sound batteries pass inspection.

Full Battery Assessment Can Take Up to 4 Months
Due to the depth of testing involved, a single battery assessment can take more than two weeks, with repeated cycles often required for accuracy. In some cases, a full testing programme may stretch up to four months, reflecting Makmal Hijau’s commitment to precision over speed.
Makmal Hijau Drives Warranty Support and Better Batteries
Makmal Hijau also plays a vital role in Bateriku’s nationwide warranty programme. Faulty batteries returned through Bateriku Pitstops are analysed at the lab to identify root causes. These findings are then shared with production partners to improve future battery designs and manufacturing quality.

Looking Ahead: R&D and Sustainability
Beyond testing Astra batteries, Makmal Hijau is evolving into Bateriku’s research and development hub. The lab is preparing to offer third-party testing services, pursue ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, and expand into EV battery testing.
Research is also underway into lithium-based and sodium-based battery technologies, supporting the shift toward greener and more sustainable energy storage solutions.
Makmal Hijau: The Backbone of Trust
Today, all 28 Astra battery SKUs carry SIRIM certification, a direct result of Makmal Hijau’s rigorous processes. By reducing reliance on external laboratories while maintaining high standards, Makmal Hijau functions as Bateriku’s internal quality guardian. They ensures only dependable, high-quality batteries reach Malaysian motorists.
